Thanks for your comments and link Brad - nice review of the research.

I came across another pointed rejoinder to the article here: http://scienceblogs.com/drugmonkey/2009/08/the_myth_about_exercise_gimme.php

I agree w/you about the article being a disservice to the public: it can take a while to build sufficient strength and endurance, but IMHO, the fitter you are, the more cals you can burn via exercise.

Had John Cloud actually bothered read the research, he would have come to a very different conclusion on the topic. But that wouldn't have sold magazines. Instead, he skewed the facts to support a conclusion that is spurious if not downright wrong. The upshot is that he's done a grave disservice to the general public. I'd encourage you to read my rebuttal to Mr. Cloud on my blog, www.workout911.com, where I actually cite the research on the subject. Spread the word: exercise is good for waistline!

Thanks,

Even worse, he cherry-picked info from the study and made it sound more dramatic... for example, he states:

"...but the women who exercised — sweating it out with a trainer several days a week for six months — did not lose significantly more weight than the control subjects did"

"Sweating it out"??? LOL - if you read the study, you'll find out they were working out at 50% VO2max - that's officially low intensity exercise that would only make someone sweat if they were exercising under a heat lamp.

But - as I've noted on the BBR forum many times - "contrarian" ideas sell. TIME obviously doesn't care that it may be discouraging to people and put them off exercise, period - for health reasons as well as weight loss.

It sounds to me that he feels he needs to be rewarded for exercise. He might skip the VersaClimber and his blueberry bar reward tommarrow? How about stick with the VersaClimber and just skip the blueberry bar.

He definately needs help from the nutrition side of the equation.

Sounds to me like he is just telling people to forget the exercise, it dosen't work because you eat to much afterward. He should be telling them to exercise and use sound nutritional practices afterward. That will work, as proved by you, myself and many others.
